Dell back into the fray with Windows phones

The Dell Lightning

So things come full circle! Dell used to have one of the best selling Pocket PC’s on the market with the Axim line of devices, then they bailed when the trend went to converged devices (combining PDA with phone).  It’s good to see them back with some offerings running the upcoming Windows Phone 7 operating system.

This particular model is called the Dell Lightning.  Some specs:  Slide-out keyboard,  4.1″ WVGA (800 x 480 pixel) OLED screen, 1 GHz Snapdragon processor, 512 MB of RAM, 1 GB of internal storage, 5MP camera, digital compass, FM tuner and 1400mAh battery.

Apparently this device (at least initially) will come in a GSM flavor, meaning it would be headed to AT&T and T-Mobile.

While I haven’t had the opportunity to hold this device in my hands, I already know I don’t care for that keyboard layout, based on the form factor.  Been there, done that, with two other previous PDA-phones (HTC 6600 and Samsung i-700) and it’s a pain in the butt to type – the device becomes top-heavy…
