June 4, 2010 marks the end of an era for me, and the beginning of another. Since 1998, I have owned and used some form of Windows Mobile device, starting with a Philips Nino. After that I transitioned to a:
- Casio Cassiopeia
- Then on to the iPaq world with the 3875, 3850, 3950, 5400 series (ahh, the old biometric scanner on that one!)
- After that, I moved on to the Samsung i700
- Then the Audiovox HTC 6600 and HTC 6800 (Mogul
- I then switched to the HTC Touch Pro and finally the Touch Pro2, my most recent device.
It was quite a ride, and there are many fond memories of those devices, and the new & exciting things each new one could do. Sometimes the improvements were not all that great, but I always tried to stay current with the device I owned, and I was “loyal” to Microsoft, maintaining a site and user group devoted to Windows Mobile devices. My most recent device, the Touch Pro2, was an amazing piece of hardware, but if it weren’t for a customized ROM that I installed on the device, I would have been disappointed far earlier.
That brings me to the present day. On June 4th, I officially took the plunge and moved to Android. I am the proud owner of a Sprint HTC EVO 4G and I can say in all honesty that I couldn’t be happier. Read more after the break…Granted, I know I am in the “honeymoon phase” with my new device, and I know I will find faults and weaknesses with the hardware as well as the Android OS, but I am ready to give it a try. No piece of hardware is perfect, and no OS is either, but I sincerely believe that Android shows a lot of promise.
There are already countless reviews of the EVO 4G published, so I don’t intend on re-writing what others have already said, but I do plan on writing some articles which compare the transition of a decade-long Windows Mobile user to the Android environment. I have already found suitable replacements for many of the Windows Mobile apps that I routinely used, but there are still some apps I am seeking. Hopefully my commentary will shed some light for others who might be contemplating a switch to Android. It is not my intention to sway, but to inform. My decision did not come lightly, but (so far) I am quite pleased!
If you will excuse me, I must return to my EVO and continue to get acquainted! More soon!
